The 1st welcome gift when we stepped into the K2 class was an activity where our teacher allowed us to feel that all of us (children, parents, teachers) are in control of how fun we want our learning to be. All of us participated enthusiastically in the class activities.
1st: we turned 10 fast rounds with arms up, then we felt the classroom spinning around us, we learnt how to stop the classroom from spinning around.
The teacher said:"If you want to have fun learning, you need to know why and what you are doing. To know why and what you are doing, you need to question yourself and question others, participate actively, take initiative, try your best instead of waiting for others to feed you, take responsible control and be resilient....!" So much more she has said, we cannot remember all, but she said that she will remind us all. Yeh!
2nd: we saw how funny the teacher was when she dramatized a passage to check our listening skill. From the passage, we learned the word: blazing, and the correct usage of the word: flames. Active listening and eyeball contact are all that she requested from us when she is in action. She gets really mad when we give attention to our toes instead of her! Some of us took turn to dramatize the passage too, its silly but we use the words 'flames and blazing' very well in our lines with actions.
3rd: for those who didn't have the chance or who are shy to dramatize, the teacher won't let them off 'NO MATTER WHAT'. She wrote the lyrics of a song on the white board, as she writes, she sound out every syllable and periodically check whether our eyeballs are following the letters. You bet it right, she took a while to finish writing that 22 words song because she constantly stop to remind those whose eyes wondered off from the board. She is really quite calculative, as she really only gave 3 chances to those who disturbed the class with unnecessary noise or are not attentive within that 15 minutes lecture/activity. But she is very tolerant with some of the children who could not pronounce 'blazing' clearly or keep forgetting the meaning of that word.
This is how we were reminded by our K2 teacher of our fun and exciting learning journey ahead of us.
Dear Parents,
The above is my journal of my observations on the children, my teaching strategies, class learning objectives, classroom rules and most importantly the skills of learning. I hope that you will enjoy reading despite that it is very wordy.
How well your child will benefit and learn, nurture and grow will be fully determined by how well you support your child's skills of learning, respond and interact with them attentively if they are sharing with you their newly acquired thoughts or knowledge and skills. Please do not equate learning to academic knowledge!
Similarly, how well the teacher can teach your child also depends on how well you follow up with your child's work and how generous are you in giving constructive feedback to the teacher. Please don't wait for several months to feedback a concern or problem. I hope to work closely with you in ensuring that your child benefits and gets the most out of his/her learning.
Cheers
Phyllis
